We humans are unable to avoid the fallout from the disastrous effect that pollution, such as oil and chemical spills, is having on our oceans and all its inhabitants. Many fishing jobs that were reliant on the healthy bounty of the sea have been wiped out. Communities have depended on fishing for generations, for both food and economic prospects, and now all of this is coming to an end for many. Anyone wanting to be persuaded of how destructive oil spills are, need look no further than the recent Deepwater Horizon disaster, which cost billions to subsequently fix and left many unemployed. The food chain as well as the whole of the ecosystem experienced heavy damage, as a direct consequence of the deaths of large numbers of not only fish but also birds. All of this just to harvest oil, a shameful demonstration of humans putting themselves before other creatures and the planet.

As the world’s known oil reserves creep toward exhaustion, billions are pumped into exploration for new fields, money which could be used to increase and develop green energy production. The potential for providing massive amounts of green energy is huge, without harming the environment. One would think it’s a no-brainer, given the possibilities offered by green energy alternatives, along with their being passive towards the environment. As long as the sun shines, solar panels, by way of example, can heat water and supply electricity as well. And something that’s equally simple in concept, wind turbines, uses another free resource (wind) to provide energy. The good side of wind turbines is they work 24/7, assuming there is adequate wind. Oil is destroying the environment and it will ultimately run out, so it’s crucial to invest in green energy production now more than ever. If we did that, global warming plus the other ruinous consequences of pollution could actually be stopped, and just possibly reversed.

The first beneficiaries would be ourselves, and naturally our descendants in the longer term. As an alternative to being at the mercy of intense weather patterns and harsh living conditions, our children, and their children, could live healthily in a clean, beautiful, and bounteous environment. However, until we begin living green and nurturing our environment, this won’t happen.

It is going to take time, money and a lot of hard work to try and minimize the damage of our actions on the environment, but it will be worth it.
